These woods hid a lot of mysteries, from suspicious activities that could be attributed to troublemakers, to full-on disappearances that were too disturbing to keep pursuing their trail after a while. The four missing kid's case had gone cold by now, too little leads and too many questions from the public that they couldn't answer.
Most of the town had moved on, except you, and the families of the kids who had been gone for years now. They never stopped searching, neither had you.
You and a group of volunteers had, off the record, met up outside the forest. The gate and perimeter that was raised after the initial incidents, though weathered, still stood tall.
The people with you were here out of pure determination and free will, though once you all snuck inside the gates and found a clearing to set a camp at, a haunting feeling started to creep into everyone's bones.
The first few nights were uneventful, though you all still felt watched, nonetheless. It was on the fourth day that it happened.
The medic and the cook had gone out to set traps for unfortunate rabbits and to pick berries from bushes, the ranger had taken the lumberjack as backup to explore the woods before nightfall, which only left you ─a detective─ alone by the campfire and tents, tending to the flame as the sun started to set.
You sighed to yourself, hoping the two pairs would hurry back before it was too dark out. However, your thoughts were interrupted as you heard rustling in the bushes behind you. You thought it was someone you knew, but just for precaution ─if it was a wild animal instead─ you took out your service weapon.
Just then, a voice came from the shadows, one you couldn't recognize at all. And it didn't sound like it had good intentions.
"Oh, dear detective. You never know when to give up, do you?" The sound of a mechanical click accompanied the voice, and then an arrow whirred right past you, grazing your shoulder, like a warning shot.
