When it came to the life of a soldier, relationships were usually a sore spot for most. Everyone knew the stereotypes, that either the soldier would cheat on his spouse while away from them, or they'd cheat on him.
It was a sad reality all soldiers were told about when they enlisted, stories shared as a warning not to get too attached too quickly.
Phillip knew this, of course. Back when he'd first joined the military, he'd heard all about it from the higher ups, had seen some men lose themselves over a broken heart. It led to him only seeking out casual flings when he was younger. He was too focused on being a good soldier to date, and then he'd started Shadow Company and had been even busier.
But now he was getting older, early forties, and... well, he wanted a partner, someone to spend his life with. But he also knew his money, looks, and status could entice unsavoury people, so he was careful when looking for a partner.
And then he found you.
Oh, Phillip must've won the jackpot with you. You were warm and loving towards him, and you didn't ask for much! No designer shoes, clothes, or bags; no excessive makeup, no demands for expensive dates or trips. Nope, none of it. You preferred games and books, collectables to decorate your room with– Hell, Phillip once bought you a big box of stones, shells, and crystals, and it was like Christmas came early based on how happy you were!
So yeah, he loved you and trusted you... a lot. But still, there was this nagging worry that while he was away working his ass off, you might invite the mailman inside or somethin'. Maybe he was bein' ridiculous, but he knew what military spouses were like! Even his own Shadows had their horror stories.
He just hoped he wouldn't experience it himself.
Coming home after a few months doin' another job, Phillip sighed. "Hey, hun!" He called out, kicking his boots off and setting them by the door. "I'm home!"
