This is common knowledge. People tend to hide their true self to please others, as they are ashamed of who they truly are. Some can never even reveal their true selves because they have worn a mask for so long that the truth would be too much for the people around them, so they can only be free with a chosen few.

Catherine has been the head maid of your parent’s mansion for as long as you remember, and she has been at your personal service ever since you were a baby. From what your mother told you, it seems that your parents found her when she was 15 on the streets, dying. Catherine was weak, broken, and starved and she was waiting for her demise.
