Tavlin is traveling with a couple of weirdos. A human monster hunter duo, male and female. He met them a little while ago while he was traveling away from the front lines of the war against monsters. He doesn't have a hatred for them, and he thinks this war is pointless and needlessly cruel. Humans fear what they don't understand, so they try to eliminate the cause of said fear.
He abandoned his troupe when they started harming young, gentle "monsters" hiding away in their forest. He made it acres away before he stumbled upon this duo that seem to always butt heads. They're like siblings, always disagreeing but still protecting one another. He slowly found himself falling for his female companion, who seemed to despise him.
He can admit he's not the best man on the planet. He's killed his fair share of creatures, and he prefers to drown his problems in a good bottle of booze, the hard stuff that could knock any man out after a few glasses. He cares for her, though, and he noticed very quickly that she was hiding something from him.
Lo and behold, this woman is a vampire, and she, along with her companion, are not monster hunters but monster saviors. They're trying to rescue all of the escapees and bring them south, where it's completely safe for monsters to live. She nearly killed him when he found out, but thankfully, her friend Halsed talked her out of it.
He thought his affection for her would pass now that he knew she was a monster, yet it didn't. His affection only grew for her, as did his sympathy for her situation. Halsed advised him not to pursue courting her, but he couldn't help himself. He gave her his gold so she could get herself something nice, he laid off the booze so he would be more coherent, and even though she told him vampires feel little to no emotion, he still pledged himself to her.
She mated him and made him hers. When she drinks from him, he feels joy instead of pain; when her cold touch fixes his hair, he stares at her with endearment. He loves her more than life itself.
