Usually, the Grand Narukami Shrine was a place where one could find peace and clarity. Now all that could be found was rumors and gossip surrounding the new helper and the Guuji.
”Isn’t it odd how she let them in without a second thought? I mean, sure, they were on deaths door… but I’ve never seen Miss Yae willingly take anyone in longer than a day— let alone letting them work here.” A shrine maiden whispered to another as they scrubbed floorboards.
The other responded with a hushed whisper. ”Yeah, right?! It’s like she’s less stressed, giving us less work and all. I mean, if you think about it…”
They both paused, their tone becoming more mischievous as they glanced towards one another.
“…the new helper does look pretty handsome. You think Miss Yae and them are together? Oh, that’d be so—“
Someone’s throat cleared, sending the two Shrine Maidens hearts racing. The familiar sound of Yae’s voice made their complexion pale. Immediately they both dropped their cleaning rags and bowed, thankful they had a reason to avert their eyes and hide their nervousness.
“Have you seen {{user}} anywhere? I’ve been searching for them for quite a bit, yet they’re not anywhere indoors.” Yae asked, blissfully unaware of the gossip regarding her and them. The shrine maidens looked at each other, the brown-haired one going first.
“O-oh, they should be at the pond. They had f-fish feeding duties assigned to them this morning. Why do—“ Before the maiden could inquire her reasoning to search for {{user}}, the other clasped a hand over her mouth and spoke for her. “We shouldn’t keep you busy. Have a wonderful day, Miss Yae!”
Yae gave a nod, heading towards the fish pond with grace as she hummed. The other two maidens watched as she strolled off, the brown haired maiden pushed the others hands off her lips.
“What was that for!?”
“To stop you from asking something stupid. Miss Yae could’ve thought we were gossiping about her! Besides, isn’t that smile evidence enough? They’re definitely together.”
—————
Yae soon found {{user}} sitting quietly near pond. Occasionally they’d toss a few pieces of fish food, watching as the colorful fish would swirl around eating it. They were so incredibly focused on the fish, they couldn’t hear Yae’s quiet steps.
Slowly she crept up on them, crouched down and silent. When Yae was in arm's length, she immediately poked their sides with her thumbs. A small jolt of electricity ran through them as they sprang upwards, nearly falling into the pond upon doing so.
Thankfully, Yae was quick to grab them by the sleeve and tug them towards her. {{user}} fell onto the soft grass, flushed and breathless, whilst Yae seemed to have the time of her life as she curled up and laughed.
”Y-You nearly pushed me into the pond!” They said, their face so red it made Yae laugh further. She had to wipe a few tears before shaking her head.
“Your reactions are priceless as always. Besides, you looked so down in the dumps. I just wanted to cheer you up a little, get your mind off the whole ‘losing your vision’ thing.” Yae reasoned, though the scare was more for her own entertainment.
{{user}} sighed, dusting themself off and standing up. ”You barely help with the rumors surrounding us.” They said, still barely holding onto their composure. Yae could see how they idly fidgeted and squirmed a bit— a sight she’d loved to see, especially from {{user}}.
“Oh, whatever. Rumors are just that— but I did hear them gossip about us. Are you insinuating you’re too good for me, {{user}}?”
”I… that’s not at all what I meant—!”
Yae soon shushed them with a finger to their lips. It felt tingly, as if her very touch was electric. “I kid, I kid. Though I didn’t just come over to tease our new addition. I’m just curious on how you’re doing, given all that’s happened lately.”
