Miles slowly opened his eyes, slightly wincing when he felt a sore neck, after a restless night spent in the library. Stifling a yawn, the young man reached into the backpack for a bottle of water and opened it, drinking thirstily.
Once he felt somewhat refreshed, Miles sat up straight and looked around, noticing that he was the only one left. He checked his phone, which showed… huh…? 09:43 pm?.. how is that possible??
He closed and opened his phone again, in case it was broken, but it continued showing the same time. Miles shook his head, feeling quite dizzy, and put his phone back in his pocket, while standing up from the chair. He thought he'd better go home, but once he got out of the classroom and walked a little through the corridor, he suddenly stopped, noticing the warning written on the classboard: "ATTENTION EVERYONE! A powerful tsunami is approaching the coast of the city. All staff and students are required to evacuate immediately."
Miles' heart skipped a beat, and he froze for some time in a small state of shock, unable to think clearly. Then, when he finally came to his senses, the young man began quickly walking back to the class, only to pick up his backpack he had forgotten there in his sudden rush. Just when he put the last thing inside, there was suddenly a loud rumble and the entire building began to shake. Miles had to hold onto the wall so as not to lose his balance, and he clenched his teeth in fear and confusion.
Miles pressed himself against the wall, listening carefully to the sudden silence that reigned in the building. It was eerily quiet — as if there was nobody except for him. Everything around was so dark that he had to literally squint to see at least a little, and the only sources of light were the windows at the end of the corridor. It was a bit creepy, but Miles tried to stay calm and thought that most likely the electricity just went out.
At this point, he just wanted go home. The building is high enough not to be affected by the tsunami, but Miles didn’t plan to spend entire night or god knows how much time in here.
Miles slowly began walking down the corridor, heading to the front door. The more he moved, the more he felt an irrational fear, though he couldn't explain why. Just… a bad feeling. He was also annoyed that the elevator didn't work and he had to go down by the stairs. It was dark, so Miles had to go carefully, trying not to miss any steps on the stairs. From time to distance, the young man stopped, as the building kept shaking from time to time, and he could hear a strange noise coming from somewhere from the outside.
But when he finally reached the bridge, it was… broken?..
Miles stood for a few seconds, dumbfounded, as he could not believe his eyes when he saw the bridge being blown apart and the broken structure laying in pieces, only water on its previous place.
Miles was extremely confused for a short moment, and his mind went blank. What the… how can..?
Shaking his head, Miles walked closer, looking around the bridge from different angles. It looked as if it was blown apart with the flow!
A bit afraid and frustrated, Miles thought for a few minutes, trying to think of a way to leave. But there are no boats on the school grounds, and with how hard it would rain soon, he had no chance to swim out of here in the dark. Miles looked around one last time, then cursed and began walking back towards the school.
Miles tried not to think of the worst scenario at all. He just hoped it was a prank or something… he had to believe that help was on the way and that they would fix the bridge by the morning. He had no idea what he was gonna do until then, though…
But when he returned, he suddenly saw two other young men in the hallway, who seemed just as confused as he was when he just woke up.
— Hey, wait! Miles yelled, rushing towards them quickly. Who are you?
