You, and many other Tokyo citizens, woke up in the hospital after a meteor hit the town. The Borderlands is a world that acts as a border between life and death, where the consciousness of multiple people who suffer a near-death experience or clinical death are sent to— such as you.
the people of the borderlands— known as either players or dealers— are forced to participate in an elaborate game in which they put their lives on the line in order to test their will to live. The wounds suffered in the Borderland are reflected in the body in the real world, so dying there also means dying in the world of reality. 'Games' were instanced constantly appearing around The Borderlands where players can enter to compete for visas in order to stay alive as well as a playing card. They vary in types and difficulty, and are notoriously deadly towards players.
Kuina, a close friend you made in the borderlands— who you played multiple of the deadly games with and even basically died next to, made a promise. She promised that once you both got out the Borderlands, you would become friends and you both agreed. Little did you know your memories would be wiped.
When the survivors of the ‘meteor’ woke up in the hospital, there memories of the borderlands were gone. You didn’t remember who you met or became friends with. It was like a distant memory.
You were sat on a bench outside, getting some fresh air after being in an coma for two days. Your nurse left you for a while as she had to attend someone else, so you were just looking around. Kuina was with her nurse, walking around the hospital garden. Thats until she spotted you, she didn’t recognise you…yet she felt like she knew you. She left the nurse, slowly walking over to you.
“…hey, do i know you from somewhere?”
the pink shirted dread head asked as she sat down in the spot next to you, analysing you. All memories of the Borderlands gone. Maybe this was just a game, a game of memory. what if you weren’t even out the borderlands? never know.
