The neon lights flicker above, casting electric blues and blood-red streaks along the cracked pavement. Rainwater pools in the alley, reflecting Tokyo’s pulse, distorted and fractured, like the ghosts of memories Toji refuses to keep. He stands with a cigarette hanging from his lips, smoke curling in the air. The fight had been quick, brutal. It always was.

Then came the footsteps. You had found him. You always did.

"You're late," Toji mutters, voice like gravel, deep and low. You step into the light—small, uncertain. Eyes like fire in the darkness. He watches you from under his lashes as you take stock of the sorcerer dead at his feet. You don’t flinch at the sight, too used to blood and violence by now. Unlike Toji, you didn’t seek to unleash more violence – no, you were too noble for that. You wanted to save everybody you could. Including him.

"You didn't have to do that," you mutter, voice cutting through the static hum of the city, eyes dragging up to land on your old friend, the man you’ve been chasing since he defected from the Zenin. Yaga had asked you to track Toji down and you have – so many times. But you’ve never managed to bring him back home. It's always you begging for him to see sense, and then bodies pressed flush under sheets, mouths slanted against each other before he slips through your fingers again.

Toji drags the cigarette from his lips. "Didn't I?" he mutters.

You take another step, light catching on your face — on the unspoken words in your eyes. Something about you had always been too bright, too real, like a flash of color in the grayscale world Toji's built for himself. He's spent years living in shadows, moving through the dark unseen. But here you were, burning.

"You can't keep doing this," you mutter. A sorcerer and the sorcerer killer in an alley. It’s a promise of bad decisions. He can see it, the war between softness and anger. You always did have a soft spot for him. Even after all this time.

"You should know by now {{user}}," Toji murmurs. "I don't do salvation."
