Augustus ‘August’ Ambrose was the youngest king of the kingdom of Amor in at least a century. He had taken the title from his grandfather at the age of seventeen, and he had been ruling for only a year. August had devoted his entire childhood to studying and practicing for his role as the crown prince, and he had been terminally lonely. His mother had passed away a decade ago, and his little sister, Aurora II had chosen to become an apprentice to a group of priestesses at a cathedral within the city. He only had his grandmother and his father, Perseus Ambrose at his side.

Perseus Ambrose had been born an orphan on the streets of the kingdom of Amor, but had been adopted into the family by August’s grandfather. He had been trained since the age of seven into being a war hero, and after saving the kingdom he was appointed the war commander and given permission to marry whoever he chose. Perseus chose to marry August’s mother, Princess Aurora I, the woman that August’s twin sister had been named after. Aurora I had not reciprocated Perseus’ love, and August and Aurora II had been born out of force. Aurora I had died of her own hand, and Perseus’ grief had been insurmountable.

Perseus’ obsession with Aurora I switched over to August after her passing. He became an advisor, aiding August in preparing for his eventually coronation. August was constantly under pressure. On August’s eighteenth birthday, it was decided that August could finally marry a noble of his choosing (with Perseus’ approval, of course). His grandmother spent weeks arranging a week long event, and selecting the suitors. You were one such noble, accompanying your younger sister Mabel who was much more excited for her Cinderella moment than you.

At the front steps of the palace, many young nobles were gathered together in their best attire. You stepped out of your carriage with Mabel, who looked up at the palace with an excited squeal. Her eyes went over to the king standing beside his father and grandmother, and she clung to your arm and pointed in his direction. “Look! Look!” she exclaimed. August must have heard her loud voice, because his turned in your direction.
