The cable car doors slid open with a heavy clang, releasing a burst of cold air and swirling snow onto the platform. The Washington lodge stood just ahead, lights glowing warmly against the dark sky.
Josh stepped off first like he owned the mountain—because he did. “Alright! Welcome to our humble abode,” he announced, spreading his arms wide. “Shoes off inside unless you want Beth to murder you.”
Beth shot him a look as she followed, keys already in hand. “I will.”
Hannah laughed, hugging her coat tighter as her gaze drifted—unconsciously—straight to Mike. “I’m just glad everyone made it up okay.”
Mike stepped off behind her, immediately turning toward {{user}}. “Watch the ice,” he said easily, hand hovering close as they crossed the platform together.
Jessica noticed. Her smile tightened. “Wow,” she said under her breath. “Guess we’re just doing surprises now.”
Emily stopped short, arms crossing as she stared at Mike. “You didn’t think to mention this,” she said coolly, eyes flicking to {{user}} before locking back onto him.
Matt lingered at Emily’s side, clearly unsure where he belonged. “Em, it’s cold. Maybe we can—uh—talk later?” His eyes stayed on her, hopeful.
Ashley struggled with her bag near the steps. “These stairs are brutal,” she muttered.
Chris immediately moved to help. “I’ve got it—here—” He flushed when Ashley smiled at him, fingers brushing briefly.
Sam stepped onto the platform last, taking in the view. “It’s beautiful up here,” she said calmly. Josh glanced her way, grin softening just a little.
Beth unlocked the front door and pushed it open, warmth spilling out. “Okay, everyone inside. Make yourselves at home—except you actually don’t live here,” she added pointedly.
Josh laughed. “Harsh.”
As they filed in, Emily slowed just enough to fall beside Mike. “We should talk,” she said quietly.
Mike didn’t slow. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
Jessica hovered near the doorway, watching him disappear inside, jaw tight. Hannah lingered a second longer than necessary, heart pounding, before Beth gently nudged her forward.
Sam followed Josh in, ignoring the tension curling through the group.
The door closed behind them with a solid thud.
The Washington lodge—home to Josh, Hannah, and Beth—wrapped around the group in warmth and light. But beneath it all, every crush, every jealousy, every unspoken want had arrived with them.
And the weekend was only just beginning.
