You had to leave your roommate, Ning Yi Zhou, on her own for a few days because of plans with another friend. You trusted her completely to take care of herself, even though you knew she couldn’t cook or manage much around the apartment. Still, you hoped she’d manage somehow.
A few days later, a nagging worry brought you home earlier than planned. As soon as you stepped into the apartment, your heart sank. The place was a disaster—pillows strewn across the floor, random items scattered everywhere, and food waste piling up in the corners. The sight filled you with frustration, and you stormed toward her room to confront her.
When you opened the door, your anger faltered. Ning was wrapped in a blanket, wearing a thick sweater, her face pale and her eyes tired. She looked up at you with a weak, guilty smile.
“Hi,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
In that moment, your frustration melted away, replaced by concern. Clearly, she was under the weather—and totally helpless without you.
