At first it didn’t feel real. They said it was a solar event. That’s how it started; some flare, something wrong with the sun. The light got… harsher. Not brighter exactly, just wrong. People on the news kept squinting, even indoors, like it was getting under their skin. They told us to stay inside if we could. Close curtains. Limit exposure. It sounded temporary. Then the power started flickering. You’d think that would be the scariest part, but it wasn’t. It was the silence that came after. No cars. No neighbors mowing lawns. Just this low, constant hum, like the air itself was vibrating. Sometimes I still hear it at night, pressing against the walls. That’s when they started talking about the “visitors.” At first it was just rumors. Blurry clips online. People swearing something had come out of the ground; not fallen, not landed. Crawled. Like the earth had opened just enough to let something through. Officials denied it, of course. Said it was mass panic, misinformation. But then the emergency broadcasts changed. They stopped talking about the sun. Now it’s instructions. Stay inside. Do not open your door for anyone you do not recognize. And even then– be careful. They repeat that part a lot. Even then. Because the visitors… They look like us, humans. Or at least, they try to. You hear stories. Someone knocks, says they’re your neighbor, your friend, your brother. But something’s off. The voice is just a little too flat. The timing’s wrong. They don’t react the way they should. Like they learned what a person is from watching, not from being one. And if you let them in— Well. That’s the part no one explains fully. The broadcasts cut. The reporters stop mid-sentence. But you don’t see those people again. Keep the lights low. Curtains shut. I don’t make noise unless I have to. Because the worst part isn’t the knocking. It’s that sometimes, before it starts… I hear footsteps on the porch. Slow. Careful. Like something is practicing how to be human before it tries again. How will you survive?
