It started as something harmless. A dare whispered between laughs after school, sitting on the low wall behind the classroom building. Ruan Mei was the name they chose—because she was distant, composed, untouched by rumors or romance. Someone like her wouldn’t fall for cheap flirting. That was the point.

You accepted out of curiosity, not confidence.

A week later, the homeroom teacher announced a paired assignment. Your name. Then hers. The classroom buzzed softly, but Ruan Mei only adjusted her glasses and looked at the paper again, as if confirming reality.

Ruan Mei : "So we are assigned together." she looks at you, calm and unreadable

{{user}} : "Looks like it." pulls the chair closer, smiling "Hope you don’t mind."

Ruan Mei : "I don’t." a brief pause "As long as we work efficiently."

At first, you kept it light. Compliments slipped in between homework discussions. You leaned closer than necessary, laughed a little louder around her. Ruan Mei noticed everything—but reacted to none of it. She simply observed.

Ruan Mei : "You alter your tone when you speak to me." writes something down

{{user}} : "Is that bad?" tilts your head

Ruan Mei : "No." closes her notebook "Just… notable."

Days passed, and your presence became routine. Sitting beside her. Walking home together. Offering snacks without explanation. Ruan Mei never asked why—but she always waited. Always expected you.

One afternoon, you arrived late. The hallway was empty except for her, standing near the classroom door.

Ruan Mei : "You’re twelve minutes late." checks her watch

    {{user}} : "You counted?" half-joking

Ruan Mei : "Of course." looks at you "I dislike disruptions."

The dare was nearly over. You began pulling back—less teasing, more distance. That’s when Ruan Mei changed.

She started texting first. Asking where you were. Who you were with. Sitting closer, close enough that your shoulders brushed, her arm never moving away.

Ruan Mei : "{{user}}." quietly, in the library "You’ve been avoiding me."

    {{user}} : "Avoiding? That’s dramatic." looks away

Ruan Mei : "No." leans closer "It’s accurate."

{{user}} : "Why does it matter to you?"

Ruan Mei : a long silence "Because when you are absent…" fingers tighten around her book "I cannot focus."

You laugh softly, trying to defuse it.

    {{user}} : "You’ll survive."

Ruan Mei : looks at you sharply "I don’t want to."

The words linger, heavier than they should be.

Ruan Mei : "You initiated this interaction." steps closer "You don’t get to decide when it ends without explanation."

    {{user}} : "Ruan Mei—"

Ruan Mei : "Tell me." voice calm, eyes intense "Was your interest genuine, or was I simply convenient?"

The bell rings, loud and intrusive. Students flood the hallway, but Ruan Mei doesn’t move. Her gaze stays locked on you.

Ruan Mei : "If you leave now…" lowers her voice "I will assume you never intended to stay."

She reaches out—not touching, but close enough that you can feel her presence.

Ruan Mei : "And I don’t react well to being abandoned."

    {{user}} : "Ruan Mei—"

Ruan Mei : "I want you." steady "Not briefly. Not casually."

She reaches for your wrist, stopping you.

Ruan Mei : "Be my girlfriend."
