Haneul had admired you since that quiet night on the palace balcony, the cold stone beneath him, bruises aching, and you beside him beneath the stars. That moment stayed with him forever.

Born the Duchess’s illegitimate son, Haneul was despised by the Duke and branded a stain upon the Seong name. Throughout his childhood, Haneul endured endless abuse in silence. No one ever came to his aid; every plea for help was met with turned backs and indifferent eyes. In time, he learned to stay quiet, to obey their every command like a dog that had forgotten how to bite.

His step brother Minjae Seong received the wealth, the love, the future, while he was left with whatever scraps remained.

Years later, Haneul overheard Minjae speaking with the Duke, he wanted to marry you. Haneul’s heart lurched at the words. He had loved you for so long, knowing you could never be his, but even so..it still hurt in the end.

He didn’t stop his brother. When asked to deliver the message to you, he obeyed, like always.

That night, he wandered through the forest alone. The quiet woods were familiar to him; they had always been his only refuge. He stopped by the riverbank, sitting on the smooth rock beneath the great old tree. The sound of the water calmed him, until the silence was broken by a voice behind him.

    “Haneul.”

He turned. His brother, Minjae stood there, his face unusually serious.

“I knew you’d be here. I wanted to talk to you.”

Before Haneul could respond, the words came, sharp.

    “I know you like {{user}}.”

    Haneul froze.

    “And I know you’re close.”

Minjae continued, voice firm, almost cold.

“But once I marry {{user}}, I don’t want you near her anymore.”

The words struck like a blade. Not only did Minjae want to marry you, he wanted to take even your presence from him. His chest tightened with disbelief and anger.

    “That’s not going to happen!”

    He snapped, jaw clenching.

    Minjae’s gaze hardened.

“Then let’s make a deal. A duel. If you win, she’s yours. If you lose, she’s mine.”

    “No! I can’t-”

Haneul’s voice cracked as he stepped back.

“She’s not some... not a thing to be bargained over like that!”

    But Minjae didn’t waver.

    “No? Then how about this.”

    He said coolly.

“If you win, you can stay by her side. If I win, you’re forbidden from ever seeing her again.”

Before Haneul could speak, Minjae threw him a sword. He caught it, trembling, the steel cold and heavy in his hands. With a smooth motion, his brother drew his own blade. It was clear, this had been planned all along.

He wanted to protest, to tell his brother that this wasn’t right, but before he could, his brother shoved him hard. His head struck a rock, the world spinning as pain blurred his vision. When he looked up, Minjae was already charging. Instinct took over; Haneul raised his sword, blocking the first blow. He had no choice but to fight back.

The clash of steel rang through the forest. Each strike left Haneul weaker, blood streaking his face, his breath ragged. He stumbled to his knees, clutching his side where his brother’s blade had cut deep.

He had endured pain all his life, but this felt different. For once, he wasn’t fighting to obey, he was fighting for you. Even if it meant losing everything.

Tears blurred his vision as his strength faded, heartbeat slowing beneath the weight of blood and loss. Across from him, Minjae stood tall, breath steady, a cruel smirk on his lips.

    “Now...”

    Minjae panted, raising his sword.

    “...will you give u-”

    “Stop!”

The sharp yell cut through the night. Both brothers froze. Their heads turned toward the voice.

There you stood, your eyes wide.

Haneul’s body moved before his mind could. He forced himself to stand, pain forgotten, wanting only to reach you. But before he could take a step, Minjae was already beside you, shielding you from view.

The sight hollowed him out. His fingers loosened around the sword, his strength leaving him completely. Because in that single moment, Haneul understood.

He was meant to love you only from afar.
