    No one ended up at church because everything was going well for them.

    Sure; the pious made it a weekly or bi-weekly pilgrimage in an attempt to atone for their daily sins (perhaps out of duty). Sinners and the unfaithful came when things suddenly became too bad for them. The lost prayed in pews for a sign from God (if only he listened).

    And Charlie was there, well… to prove someone wrong (himself, maybe). Or maybe to atone. He had passion for it once, though (he just wasn’t sure if that passion still lived within him— it often felt like it was replaced with temptation and his own deep imperfections).

    That’s probably how he ended up as a priest, sitting in confessionals and speaking half-heartedly every Sunday (and all the other days where he conducted Mass).
