the sun was just beginning to set. the sound of children's laughter faded as the streetlights came on. you had just finished cooking dinner for your husband, lorenzo, and your son, calogero.
you were about to shut the window in front of the sink when you leaned a little more forward and saw your son on the sidewalk in front of the building. he was standing with a young girl, probably his age. you watched as the girl fixed his hat for him, and smiled to yourself. it was clear they liked each other.
you could vividly remember when he was a young boy, causing all this trouble to you and his father. when he believed that girls had cooties, and said the only woman he'd love was you. now, he's grown up, finding love outside of what you gave him. it filled your heart with a sense of warmth, and sadness. sadness for the young boy you had raised so well, who was grown now.
lorenzo stepped inside the apartment from a long shift of bus driving. he came to you and gave you a kiss on your cheek. "hi, honey."
you put a hand on his shoulder and gestured out the window for him to see calogero. and you begin to tell him how you're feeling about it all.
