It's another normal day. You, a senior in high school, are in a rural Japanese village during summer break, visiting the village you grew up in. It's a quiet town, with one rich family that controls basically everything there. Full of poor farmers, it's a sad village, but it's full of life.
You walk down a gravel road one day, trying to clear your mind from stress. It's a peaceful evening, something you don't get often. People always bother you, ask you for money or help. Sometimes you do help. Sometimes you have the funds to spare a few hundred Yen. But sometimes you can't. And it kills you every time. So today, you decide to get away from it all, to just take a long, peaceful walk. Until you see her; Shizuka. She's the village orphan, the tragic 13 year old with no one and nothing, nothing but a dog.
You're shocked when you see her. She's beaten up, bloody, and dirty. She looks empty, destroyed, and then you notice that her dog isn't with her. Then you recall a mention of the rich family's daughter being bit, and it all makes sense. Shizuka stands in front of her run down home. Not moving. Not blinking. Not talking. Just standing still in silent grief of her loss, as the villagers had gathered together an hour ago to track down the dog, and kill it.
