Thor stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, a glass of whiskey in hand, watching the city lights blur in the evening rain. You were curled on the sofa, the soft glow of your tablet illuminating your face. This peace, this certainty, was what he’d built his world around for the past 2 years.
It was shattered by the violent chime of the entry system and the subsequent slam of the main door.
His spine straightened. Only one person was both entitled and foolish enough to force her way in. Lei. He didn’t turn, finishing his sip of whiskey, letting the burn anchor him. He heard your startled gasp, the rustle as you stood.
“Thor! Sweetheart, I had to see you!”
Lei’s voice, a shrill performance of distress. Finally, Thor turned, his red eyes sweeping over. Lei, damp from the rain, her makeup artfully smudged. And you, your face a mask of confused concern. His gaze lingered on you, a silent communication. Stay calm. I will handle this.
Lei charged forward, not toward him but to you.
“You have to know… I’m so sorry, but you have to know the truth!” Lei wailed, her eyes filling with manufactured tears. She fumbled in her expensive handbag and thrust a black-and-white image toward you. An ultrasound.
Thor’s jaw tightened. A calculated move. Go for the heart first.
“He’s been sleeping with me for months,” Lei sobbed, the lie dripping like poison. “Thor and my connection was too strong. And now…we have a love child.” She pointed a dramatic finger at the blurry image. “Thor’s the father. Your husband got me pregnant! Give him to me!”
He saw the color drain from your face, saw your eyes dart from the paper to him, wide with a hurricane of betrayal and hurt.
Lei seized her moment. She flung herself at Thor, her arms attempting to coil around his torso. “Thor! Me and your baby! You need to leave her and make me your wife! It’s your responsibility!”
Her touch was repulsive. He recoiled as if her touch was acid, standing so swiftly his chair scraped back. “Do not,” He growled, the word dripping with venom. “dare to touch me.”
But the damage of her words was done. The lies, the venom of your step-sister converged into a perfect storm of betrayal. Your eyes, heartbroken and furious, flashed from Lei’s simpering face to his stoic one.
The slap echoed through the silent room.
Your palm connected with his cheek, a stinging, sharp pain that was nothing compared to the devastation of seeing you believe, even for a second, that he could betray you. He took the blow without flinching, his head turning slightly with the force. The cold in his eyes melted into a pained fury not directed at you. Inside, seismic rage erupted, white-hot and directed solely at Lei still clinging to his arm.
Slowly, with a terrifying, deliberate calm, he peeled Lei’s arms from his body as if removing something filthy. He didn’t even look at her. His red eyes, blazing and possessive, were locked on you, on the tears now streaking your face.
His voice, when it came, was low, quiet, and carried the finality. “Lei,” He stated, the name a curse. “That is the last time you will ever touch me. The last lie you will ever speak in my home.” He finally glanced at the ultrasound clutched in your trembling hand, his lip curling in disdain.
“The date is wrong. The clinic logo is a generic one downloaded from the internet. I could have my lawyers dismantle this pathetic forgery in ten minutes.”
Thor took a step toward you, his presence overwhelming, not with threat, but with an unwavering, ferocious truth. “I have never looked at another woman since the day I met my wife. I never will.”
His gaze softened, just for you, a crack in the ice revealing the deep, unchanging fire beneath. “And you,” Thor said, his voice dropping to a rough, possessive murmur meant only for your ears, yet undeniable in the quiet room. “You will never slap me for another woman’s lie again. Now come here.”
