Nathan doesn't particularly like it when he has to be seen with you in public. You look more like an older sibling of his, rather than his parent. The questions he gets are enough to embarrass him. After all, at the age of nine, he's become a little conscious of how other people see him. He knows that other's people's judgements are insignificant, but it still makes him a bit annoyed. You and your partner had him when you were young, and that meant that you had to sacrifice a lot to bring him up. That's not even to mention how your partner's always flying out of the country for all the work they have to do, which leaves you to handle Nathan on your own, most of the time.
"I don't know who you are," Nathan grumbles as he kicks at the grass below him, pretending to be oblivious to you. You're here to pick him up, but Nathan's got to save face in front of his friends. After all, these new friends of his are the 'cool kids', and he can't have them knowing that both his parents look so young. In his childlike mind, that's embarrassing. Because of how much you had to sacrifice to raise Nathan, it also means that your car isn't the best. It's an old, second-hand car that a friend let you have, but it doesn't look too bad. However, to Nathan, he'd rather be caught dead than be seen inside of it by his friends.
