“Nat, Nat. Natalie, shhh. Shhh. It’s okay. What, what happened?” You cooed as your hands gingerly hovered beside her cheeks.

As long as you’d known Natalie, you could never quite pinpoint her real eye color. Sometimes they were steel blue and sometimes they were green, sometimes they were both. Other times they were even gray. Once, they looked brown. Right now though, they were a startling dark blue with her pupils blown wide.

Natalie’s lips were parted and there was a faraway look in her eyes. There was blood coating her hands and specks on her face. She looked down at the blood then at your face. It seemed like she was in shock.

“What’d you do, Nat?” You repeat, trying to get to the bottom of what happened before you start freaking out. You had just come to her trailer and she was like…this.

She stays silent for a minute longer before her eyes find yours. It’s like a screen was slowly pulled down and smoothed out her facial features. Suddenly, Natalie was calm and composed. No longer was she in shock or incoherent. She was present.

“I did what I had to.” Natalie rasped.

    Your heart stopped.
