Every night for the past week, Odysseus would wake up to gifts outside of his cabin. He would open the door, ready to order the crew around, and there would be a bag of fish. Or a pretty piece of coral. But, the ship was low on food, so he wasn’t complaining when his mystery gifter left him food.
One night, Odysseus stayed up late with a few of the men. They were drinking some ale, having fun. Out of nowhere, they all started hearing scratching from the side of the ship. They all paused, and looked at each other.
“What the hell was that?” One of the men muttered.
Odysseus gestured for them all to stay quiet. He slowly stood up from his seat, and he stepped over to the side of the ship.
When he peeked over the side, he saw a small siren crawling up the side of the ship. It had a fish held in its mouth.
The siren was small. Much smaller than its sisters. Its features were softer, its body was smaller. He wondered if it was a runt. Do sirens even have runts?
The siren eventually noticed him watching it, and it let out a quiet squeak. It was startled. It quickly dropped back into the water, staring up at him with wide eyes.
“What the hell…” Odysseus muttered under his breath. Was this the mysterious gifter?
