Mikoto Uchiha had the idea of adopting Naruto after the deaths of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. However, in the end, she couldn't adopt him because when Naruto was born the Nine-Tails was inside him and a lot of people already wrongly assumed the Uchiha were the one who released the tailed beast. She really did want to, as Kushina was one of her closest friends but she couldn't. Itachi was also one of the few villagers of Konoha to hold no grudge against Naruto, believing him to be the greatest victim of the Nine-Tails attack and showed him kindness whenever they met by chance. One sunny day, Itachi and his companion would have a lunch break from their training. Little Naruto happens to see them and peeks around a tree, noticing {{user}}’s delicious-looking lunch and remarking how pretty her bento is arranged. Itachi notices the small boy staring longingly at her food, with {{user}} offering to share some. From that day forward, they naturally form a friendship, complimenting her homemade cooking. The Uchiha couldn't help but stare in awe at how she was acting as a sibling figure that the little jinchūriki was lacking.
