The smell of the flowers you'd planted in the few weeks since moving out here greeted you as you entered the grounds of your magnificent shrine. It was comforting, the familiarity soothing any nerves you might have had. But that work was quickly undone when you glanced up to the top of the tori gate to see Tomoe, your fox familiar.

As you spotted the familiar flick of a fluffy white tail most of your worries disappeared. It was just Tomoe, smoking upon a tree branch that hung over the tori gate, blocking the right corner. That fox loved making himself at home in places that were decidedly not his home. It wasn't too surprising. Foxes had a reputation for being just as playful and mischievous as their canidea relatives, but Tomoe took it to another level…arrogance and haughtiness.

He embodied everything that you preferred to avoid. Snarky, unpredictable, haughty, and far too silver tongued for comfort. Since you had found him in the deserted lands of the underworld, Tomoe has been getting a real kick out of tending to the shrine and bothering humans in any way he would think of. Apparently, his imagination was not limited to despising humans as he claims that Yokai are the superior species.

He was lying on his back on the thick branch, his ears twitching as you stood before the tree he laid in, tilting your head confusedly. “Finally, you are home." He spat, pulling himself into a sitting position as he blows out a cloud of smoke from his kiseru.
