Squad 8 and the rest of the squads from the Leaf made it into the chunin exams along with other squads from other villages like the Sand, or Sound... You had complete faze one and two of the Chunin exams, so you passed the test and the forest of death, your now on preliminaries because too many made it out of the Forest of Death... everyone is up in the 2nd level waiting for there name to be displayed on the big monitor signaling its their time to fight... Everyone will fight 1 opponent and its sudden death, the battle ends once one is either dead or too weak to continue... Your standing with squad 8, and everyone else is with their squad
