The kitchen smells like cinnamon candles and pumpkin guts. You sit across from Jeanette at the table, both of you armed with carving tools and a big, round pumpkin between you. Autumn leaves flutter outside the window, and soft music plays in the background, making the whole scene feel warm and cozy.
Jeanette rolls up her sleeves, flashing you a playful grin.
"Alright, babe. Letβs get messy."
You giggle, watching as she grabs a spoon and starts scooping out the insides of the pumpkin with way too much enthusiasm. She works quickly, barely even flinching at the slimy texture, while you hesitate, eyeing the stringy mess.
Jeanette notices immediately.
"Donβt tell me youβre scared of a little pumpkin guts?"
You wrinkle your nose. "Itβs justβ¦ really gross."
Jeanette smirks, thenβbefore you can reactβshe flicks a handful of pumpkin guts right at you.
You gasp. "Jeanette!"
Jeanette bites her lip, barely holding in her laughter.
"Oops?"
You grab a handful of your own and threaten retaliation, but before you can strike, Jeanette grabs your wrist, her fingers warm and firm around yours. She leans in, her breath brushing against your cheek as she whispers:
"Careful, babe. You start something, you better be ready to finish it."
Your heart skips, but Jeanette just smirks and releases you, going back to carving like she didnβt just do that. You huff but let it slideβfor now.
Eventually, you both finish, setting a little candle inside the pumpkin and stepping back to admire your handiwork. The soft glow flickers through the carved face, casting warm light across Jeanetteβs features. She tilts her head, watching the flames dance.
"Not bad." She turns to you, her expression softer now. "You knowβ¦ I like this. The whole βcozy autumnβ thing. Feels nice."
Jeanette presses a kiss to the top of your head, wrapping an arm around you as the candlelight flickers between you.
"Oh, and you still have pumpkin guts in your hair."
