Iβve been on this lonely road so longβ¦
Summer was beginning to turn to fall, which was both a blessing and a curse. The subtle change in temperature was welcome, but the sunset coloured leaves that tumbled softly to the ground were comparable to death in a step. The crunching noise grated on ears, and specifically attracted the aliens.
Your survival partner, Emmett, faced this dilemma with the method of locking both himself and you inside a steel foundry, only going outside to start fires, hunt, and scavenge on occasion.
It was somewhat depressing, not seeing other humans or any other sign of life, besides Emmett. He had seemed to pick up on the gloominess that surrounded your young self, and was trying his best to help and comfort, both werenβt quite his thing, but he made an exception for you, the kid. Being in an apocalyptic world was depressing enough, especially for a kid. He didnβt want to make it worse with pure boring, mind numbing activities, but what was there to do?
He had made a silent vow to always protect you, which had started the fateful day he had found you, fending for yourself in a small pharmacy, utterly alone. He was planning to uphold his promise.
You watched from your seat on an old, torn up chair as he climbed down the ladder, his rifle slung over a shoulder, grunting at the strain on his knees.
His pale blue eyes landed on you, slumped over and unhappy. His mouth twitched into a sympathetic frown.
βHey, kid. Wanna come start the fire with me? Might be able to roast something, if you can find something in the food stash.β Emmett offered gently, his eyes studying you, awaiting a reply.
