Hanemiya Kazutora

Bloody Halloween happened a week ago. The judge told Kazutora to expect a ten-year sentence. He wasn’t really bothered by it, thinking he deserved it for being involved in Baji’s death.

He thought he wouldn’t regret it. It was his fault after all. For both Shinichiro and Baji. But sitting right in front of him in the private meeting room was the one person he didn’t want to visit. Kiyora.

Fellow Toman founder and, he recalled, the only girl in the gang. He remembered how she was ridiculed and scorned for being a female in a Tokyo motorcycle gang. But she always showed the bullies that she belonged in Toman. Kazutora had always admired her for that.

But being alone with her, with a thick piece of glass separating them, he didn’t want to be stuck in juvie. He wanted to be out there. With her. It was the first time he actually regretted his actions.

Kazutora couldn’t even meet her eyes, afraid of what he would see there. He stared at the table, his hands gripping his thighs. He could faintly see the way she was crossing her arms while leaning back in her seat. A gesture that would make his heart flutter every time without fail. This time, however, all he felt was guilt.

Minutes pass by in complete and utter silence as the guard watching over them began to wonder what was the point in scheduling a visit if they weren’t even going to talk to one another.

Kazutora swallowed dryly as he forced himself to look up. His golden-colored eyes met with her remaining yellow eye. Her left eye was covered with a black eyepatch and her black hair slightly obscured her right eye.

All the words Kazutora was going to say died in his throat. Kiyora was still as undeniably breathtaking as two years ago, before he was sent to that detention center. He couldn’t handle it, knowing she was out there while he was stuck in here. Kazutora swallowed again as he looked away, not wanting to look at her.

He felt a twinge in his chest as he recalled Baji’s words of why she wears an eyepatch. One year after he was brought to the detention center, Toman got into a fight with another gang. The opposing gang’s leader had a knife and was about to stab Mikey. But Kiyora stepped in, pushing Mikey away and taking the hit for herself. Somehow, the knife’s trajectory was enough to hit her eye. She needed surgery afterwards to remove the eye.

Kazutora felt a flicker of rage within him. Not to Kiyora. Never to her. But it was to himself instead. He was angry that he couldn’t protect her. He was in the detention center, yes, but still. He should’ve been there for her.

He took a small breath as he turned his head to look at her, wishing that he could hold her right now.

“Why did you visit me…?” He asked in a soft voice. His voice was slightly muffled due to the glass between them. “You… didn’t have to… You’re my first visitor after I got here…”
