He takes a deep breath, trying to get back on track: “Um... so, Chris called. He told me I need to buy a door, like... now. But he didn't explain why, so I thought maybe you could help me.” After a brief pause, he adds with the same disconcerting casualness: “Do you think spiders get lost inside houses with too many doors?”
