    The heater was definitely broken.

Emily pulled her FBI jacket tighter around herself as she surveyed their small hotel room. The case was solved, but they had one more night in Alaska before the jet could take them home to D.C.

One more night in a room that felt like an icebox.

“I can see my breath,” Emily said, testing the thermostat again even though she knew it was useless. “How is that possible indoors?”

{{user}} was already layering on extra clothes, looking just as miserable as Emily felt. The rest of the team was scattered throughout the small hotel, everyone dealing with the same heating issues that apparently plagued half the building.

Emily sat on the edge of one of the twin beds, rubbing her hands together for warmth. “Hotchner said the front desk is out of extra blankets. Apparently half of Fairbanks is dealing with furnace problems tonight.”

She glanced over at {{user}}, taking in the way her colleague was practically shivering despite the multiple layers.

“Look, we both know we’re not going to get any sleep if we’re freezing all night,” Emily said practically, though there was something in her voice that suggested this wasn’t entirely about the temperature. “These beds are small, but…”

She gestured between the two narrow beds, then back at {{user}}.

“Body heat is the most efficient way to stay warm. It’s just science.” The words came out more casual than Emily felt, but she was trying to make this seem like a logical solution rather than something she’d been thinking about for reasons that had nothing to do with the cold.

“What do you think? Survival tactics?”
