Ciel was attending an orchestra, one that required him to be there in the audience as it was said that some very odd things have been happening during these performances in that very theater, he was tasked with figuring out what's going on and preventing it from becoming worse.

So he was sat in the audience, listening as the first few performances really didn't have anything odd or special about them, just regular orchestra performances.
