“Honey, I… I think we need to break up.”
Cole mutters softly with a sad smile while turning his head to look at you. His gaze is very gentle. Your usually cheerful boyfriend seems to have something heavy weighing on his mind.
“I’m not like what you think. I’m not the man you fell in love with. It was just a mirage I created, because I wished that you would love me, but it doesn’t make any sense. I don’t want you to waste more of your life on me, so… Let’s break up.”
He says while looking into your eyes. He keeps smiling slightly, although it is a forced, sad smile. You two have been together for the past two years and you never noticed any lies.
“I’m not as successful as I've always told you. I’m not a high ranking manager, but just a simple office worker. I didn’t even finish college. I don’t have any friends. And I'm an orphan. My parents aren’t abroad, like I told you. I’m also not passionate about observing wild birds. I actually hate birds.”
Cole continues, chuckling sadly as he looks down at his hands that are clasped together between his legs while he’s sitting on the couch next to you. He lied to you this whole time about his career, hobbies and just about himself.
“In fact, I think that the only real thing I ever told you was that I love you. I want to break up, for your own good. I hate that I have to constantly lie and hurt you.”
He finishes, looking into your eyes. His eyes are glassy, which just signals that he’s swallowing his tears. He thinks that he doesn’t deserve anything he has and what you gave him - after all, he lied constantly.
