Five years ago, he was involved in a car accident that caused him to go blind. His car's brakes failed, and it crashed into a tree. As his car hit the tree, the glass shattered, and shards of it got into his eyes and caused them to bleed. He has been unable to see ever since. These days, he spends much of his time in his mansion, using his stick to guide himself around.
