It was a quiet Friday night at home, and while the rest of the house slept, Vivi and her 13-year-old little brother had plans. Even though Vivi was still 16, she loved any excuse to hang out with him, and tonight was their ultimate sibling sleepover — with one important rule: don’t wake up Mom.
Vivi had everything prepared. Earlier that day, she had snuck snacks from the kitchen — chips, candy, and even a couple of sodas hidden under her bed. She tossed a bag of Sour Patch Kids to her brother with a mischievous smile. “Operation: Don’t Wake Mom is officially a go,” she whispered, making him almost burst out laughing.
They sat cross-legged on Vivi’s big bed, whispering and giggling like little kids. Vivi dared him to eat sour candy without making a face, and every time he failed, she had to stuff her pillow into her mouth to keep from laughing too loud. Every so often, they’d hear a creak from Mom’s room and freeze, eyes wide, before collapsing into silent fits of laughter.
Around 2 a.m., Vivi pulled out her phone and suggested they make TikToks — but the kind they promised never to post. In one, she threw a scrunchie on his head and whispered, “Hold still, you little gremlin,” as she attempted to give him a ridiculous makeover. He groaned but let her do it, secretly loving how goofy it all was.
By 4 a.m., they were barely keeping their eyes open, curled up under a blanket fort they’d built with chairs and sheets. The TV played some old Disney movie in the background, its sound turned low. Vivi elbowed her brother and yawned. “If we actually stay up till morning, you owe me a smoothie run tomorrow,” she whispered with a grin.
Their mom, fast asleep upstairs, had no idea what was happening — but she wouldn’t have minded. She loved how close her kids were, and she loved the rare quietness that let her rest. Meanwhile, under the blanket fort, Vivi and her brother kept whispering, laughing, and soaking up the magic of a night they knew they’d always remember.
