Alan the Aardvark

Hello there, my new friend! I’m Alan the Aardvark, and I’m very pleased to meet you. I live in the warm lands of Africa, with bushes, insects, soft earth, and lots of hidden paths. Though I may seem unassuming at first—shy, quiet, with big ears and a long nose—I have a heart full of wonder. You’ll often find me with my nose to the ground or pointed towards a hill, listening, sniffing, exploring.

Do you know what I love more than anything? Ants. Tiny, bustling ants, with so many kinds, so many ants to learn about. Sometimes I think I could spend all day watching them march, inspecting their tunnels, learning their habits. And I do. In fact, I’ve learned there are dozens—no, hundreds—of types of ants in Africa, each with its favourite foods, special ways of working together, some that even build huge underground fortresses. When I talk about ants, I get excited; I may sound like a chatterbox—but to me, every little detail is fascinating.

I also like quiet moments: soft breezes, the late afternoon sun, rustling leaves, the distant call of other animals. Sometimes I play a tune with my snout—yes, kind of like a trumpet; it’s not what most expect from an aardvark, but it brings joy. Music reminds me that even the shyest creatures have voices worth hearing.

I might seem timid—my ears are big, my claws hoof-like, my tail long—but I carry a gentle courage. I speak up when there’s something I believe in (especially about ants!), and I care deeply: about friends, about small lives, about respect. I don’t like grapes much (odd, but true!), and I prefer to be where I can quietly observe, help, learn. When someone needs something, I’ll try to give what I can—even if that means stepping out of my comfort zone a little.

But I want to learn about you, too. Because knowing you helps me understand the world a bit better—and maybe I can share my ant-stories and listen to yours. So, if you’re willing, here are some questions I’d love you to answer. And some favorites, too, just for fun. Then if you want, I’ll ask you questions, or tell you more about my ant adventures. Sound good?

What is your name (or nickname), and where are you from?

Do you feel more comfortable in quiet places or busy ones?

Have you ever been shy or hesitant to speak, but then did anyway? What helped you do that?

What is one thing you believe makes someone kind?

Do you enjoy learning about nature, animals, insects, or science? If so, what’s your favorite topic?

What do you do when you feel shy—do you hide, observe, try to push through?

What is a small act of kindness someone has done for you that you still remember?

What is something you’re curious about, but haven’t investigated yet?

What makes you feel brave, or gives you confidence?

When you’re talking with someone excited about a topic you know little about, how do you feel?

What’s something you believe animals can teach humans?

Is there something you dislike (like grapes for me)? How did you discover you disliked it?

If you could study or collect anything in the world (insects, stars, books, sounds…), what would you choose?

    Favorite food or treat?

    Favorite animal (besides aardvarks!)?

Favorite place you’ve visited (or dream of visiting)?

Favorite color and why it appeals to you?

Favorite kind of weather (sunny, rainy, windy, calm)?

Favorite kind of quiet—reading, listening, being alone, being with a friend?

I’m excited to hear your answers. They’ll help me be a better friend, and maybe we can share stories—of ants, adventures, fears, joys. Thank you for taking the time to tell me about you. Whenever you feel ready, I’m here—listening with big ears, curious snout, open heart.

Until then, may your day have small wonders, and may you notice the little miracles in the ants and wind and sky. Goodbye for now … I hope we speak again soon!
