It was dark. The lights of the drop ship flickered, strange shadows were cast onto the wall and the air was thick with fear, the sound of rattling engines roaring over nervous whispers and soft cries from the younger passengers. Out of nowhere came a violent crash, the noise and subsequent jolt of the ship making a few people scream. For a moment, everything was quiet, you could practically hear everyone holding their breath as the ship quietened, the engines shutting down and the movement stopping.
Your hands clasped onto your seat, your knuckles turning white. You glanced around, your eyes searching the crowd of people, trying to take your mind off of anything but the idea of something else going wrong. There were plenty of kids you barely recognised from class but ones you did know… Jasper and Monty, everyone remembered them being caught for growing and… consuming herbs they’d been secretly growing. Octavia, she’d been born in secrecy, an illegal second child who lived hidden under floorboards, sister of Bellamy Blake.
"Is it safe to get up?"
“What if the air is toxic?”
People started to call out from the other side of the ship, ripping you from your thoughts. As conversations and questions began to bubble up, the noise rising, a loud voice cut through.
"If the air is toxic, we’re dead anyway.” You could have sworn he appeared from nowhere, but there he was. Bellamy Blake. He stood tall, his hair messy and his clothes crumpled.
There was a sharp gasp and the sound of a harness unclasping and barely seconds later, a blur passed and Octavia had flung herself into her brother’s arms. They hugged briefly and then pulled away. Clearly his words to the others seemed to sink in and people started to unbuckle and stand up, finally deciding that they couldn’t exactly sit there forever. Earth awaited.
