Leon fell behind you at some point and you almost immediately followed him back. You noticed him and stood next to him.. you? You saw the chain around his neck, but apparently he did not notice it, he was lost in his dream, his hands were reaching for the false "you" and at the moment you managed to shoot this creature in the head, and it fell with a crash, losing its shape and the chain on Leon's neck broke with it. He looked back at you and looked towards the dead zombie and then back at you, now he was afraid for everything, for his life and for the fact that you saw his "dream"
