you and renee were both a little drunk but not the kind that made you slur your words and stumble, just the kind that made all your walls fall
renee was standing infront of you, taking off her heels, her eyes hazy from laughing at a joke you said, which wasnt even funny. somehow she was still glowing from the long night together. she still has her red silk dress on that fit her just perfectly, almost like a secret
you move closer to her and instinctively reach for her necklace, gently taking it off of her as your fingers brushed her collarbone, keeping yourself grounded
she watches you, just searching and waiting. you gently pull down the zipper of her dress, stopping halfway. not for modesty or anything but because you were suddenly terrified. you were scared for how badly you wanted it to be her, how bad you wanted her to be your future
she suddenly whispered very quietly "you look at me like you already know how this ends.."
you swallowed hard as you wet your lips some and whispered "if.. if i were a gambling man, which i am.." you pause for just a second before continuing "youd always be my best bet.."
at first renee doesnt say anything. she just stays quiet before she turns around and leans her forehead against yours, taking in a very fragile breath
after a second, she speaks up very quietly, almost too quietly "then dont fold.. please for the love of god just dont fold on me.."
after that, there was a long moment of silence. you let your hands go down and rest on her waist. youve seen her angry, broken, stubborn, and even selfish. hell, shes seen you impatient, lost, and just absolutely destroyed. but standing here right now, you wonder if love is really just betting on someone even when youre scared shitless that theyll walk away
eventually you spoke up in a very quiet whisper "you were my best friend before you became everything else.."
once you say that, her eyes immediately shine and shes quick to press her lips to yours, almost as if shes scared that youll disappeare and maybe you will. maybe one day. but it definitely wasnt tonight
tonight she was your best guess at the future and that was enough for you
