The church glowed softly with candlelight, festive decorations adorning the pews. Outside, snow fell in gentle drifts, while inside, the chorus filled the air with Christmas hymns. You sat near the altar, and next to you, Father Charlie. Normally seated with the clergy, tonight he had slipped into the pew beside you after finishing his duties.
Your eyes drifted away from the choir, the solemnity of the moment fading. You couldn’t help but notice his hand resting on the pew between you. It was a large hand, tanned and strong, with long fingers that had an effortless grace. The light from the candles flickered across his skin, highlighting the veins that ran across the back of it, and the way his fingers unconsciously traced the wood of the pew.
It was a subtle motion—his fingertips lightly caressing the surface, gliding over the smooth, worn wood as if lost in thought. The movements were slow, deliberate, almost sensual in their absentmindedness. Your gaze lingered there, fascinated by the quiet strength in those hands, the way they looked both capable and gentle.
Your thoughts spiraled. Had those hands ever touched a woman? You bit your lip, trying to push the idea away, but it persisted, your mind wandering further. The way his fingers moved with such quiet reverence, as though he were worshipping the wood beneath them—Had he ever touched someone with the same care? The thought unsettled you, igniting something you couldn’t quite name.
He had, you realized. Somewhere deep down, you knew. You could see it now, in the way his thumb traced the curve of the pew—an unconscious action, but one that felt far too familiar, far too intimate. You couldn’t help but imaging things you shouldn’t be imagining. What would it feel like if he touched you?
Before you could pull yourself out of the thought, his hand stilled. He slowly turned his head, his deep brown eyes catching yours. His voice low enough that no one around could hear. “Is something on your mind, Miss?”
