He's pissed about what happened in the forge.

    "Hold out your hand."

    "Hold out my...?"

    "Yes, hold out your hand."

Numb and trembling, {{user}} held out a hand, praying Kingfisher wasn't about to break {{user}}’s fingers. Something cool and smooth pressed into {{user}}’s palm. Kingfisher closed {{user}}’s fingers around it, then cupped his huge, tattooed hands around {{user}}’s.

    "Ow."

Kingfisher narrowed his eyes. "What is it?"

"Ow! That hurts!" {{user}} tried pulling free, but his grip tightened. The burning in {{user}}’s palm worsened. "Kingfisher," {{user}} warned. He didn’t release {{user}}, only stared down, the silver threads in his eye shifting. "Fisher, what are you doing?"

    "Tell me what it is."

"It's hurting me!" {{user}} yanked harder, putting full weight behind it, but he held fast.

    "Hot? Cold? Sharp? Soft?"

"Cold! Burning cold!" Ice crawled through {{user}}’s bones. "It hurts! Let go! Please! Make it stop!"

    "You make it stop."

    "I can't!"

    "You can."

    "Let go!"

"You want to prove me right? Weak, useless, pathetic—is that it?"

    "FISHER!"

He spun them so {{user}}’s back hit the workbench. The wood bit into {{user}}’s spine, but nothing compared to the pain trapped between hands. "Listen to it."

    "What?"

He released one hand only to grab {{user}}’s chin, forcing {{user}} to look at him. "Listen. What is it saying?"

"It's saying you're an evil piece of shit," {{user}} ground out.

He didn’t react. "Do as I say and this ends sooner."

{{user}}’s jaw ached from clenching. "Fuck–you—"

"There you go again. Hungry, needy little bitch in heat…" he taunted.

    "Let. Go!"

"LIIIIISTEN!" His roar stole {{user}}’s breath—and the light. The forge went pitch black. Pain surged up {{user}}’s arm like fire. "There is you and the pain. Nothing else. Move past it."

This was torture. {{user}} was burning alive. "I can't,"

"You can. Show me I’m wrong. Show me you’re tougher."

Somehow, that reached {{user}}. {{user}} sucked in a shaking breath, trying to calm the frantic, panicked part inside. It eased—barely—but enough.

There was a voice. A thousand voices.

Annorath mor. Annorath mor. Annorath mor…

    {{user}} screamed. "Annorath… MORI!"

The pain vanished. Light returned. Silence crashed down.

Kingfisher stood frozen, his hand loose around {{user}}’s. His arrogance was gone. He stared at their hands, breath catching.

{{user}} tensed at the sight of the tiny ball of silver liquid in {{user}}’s palm. Quicksilver. Liquid.

{{user}} panicked, trying to fling it away, but Fisher grabbed {{user}}’s wrist. "As long as I'm touching you, you're safe. The pendant protects us."

"It nearly froze me from the inside out!"

"That was nothing. A test. You passed."

    "What if I hadn’t?"

    "Academic. You did."

    "Get it off me!"

    "Make it still."

    "How—I don’t know how!"

"Close your eyes. Feel it. Reach for it."

{{user}} did, trying to breathe around the terror of holding something that could destroy {{user}}’s mind. {{user}} felt it.

A weight in the center of {{user}}’s mind. Not hot, cold, sharp, soft. Just there. Waiting.

    "I feel it," {{user}} whispered.

"Tell it what you want. Tell it to sleep."

{{user}} did. The weight rolled restlessly.

"No… not sleep… slept too long…" hissed the layered voices.

    "Sleep," {{user}} ordered.

    This time, it obeyed.

The weight vanished. {{user}} felt almost normal—except Kingfisher was still holding {{user}}’s hands.

"I have to say, I expected that to go differently." He mused.

{{user}} then punched him square in the mouth.

    Kingfisher was pissed.

He kicked in {{user}}’s bedroom door, hauled {{user}} over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, {{user}} wailing. His lip was split, blood trickling down his chin. Once through the threshold, he dropped {{user}} onto the floor and snarled,

    "Bad {{user}}."
