Bruce - and the rest of the family, give or take Jason - had been struggling to understand why you didn’t want to be formally adopted. Bruce had a tendency to collect strays, especially the ones with sharp edges and heavy pasts. It wasn’t about ownership - it was about offering stability. Belonging. A name that meant safety, or at least something close to it.

    So your reluctance confused them.

You lived at the manor, trained with them, even bled beside them in the field. You were part of the family in all but name - and yet, when Bruce had brought up the idea of legal guardianship, you'd shut it down. Kindly, but firmly. No arguments, no anger. Just a line you didn’t want crossed.

    They hadn’t understood. Until now.

Bruce had decided - with more hesitation than he’d admit - to follow you. The others came too: Dick, ever-curious; Jason, practically vibrating with mischief; Tim and Damian (who claimed not to care, but were clearly intrigued); and Cassandra, quiet and watchful. A rare unanimous mission.

From the rooftop, they watched you meet someone. Not an enemy, not a target. Someone older. Familiar. There was ease in the way you stood near them - not just comfort, but history. You laughed, leaned into them slightly, the way people do when they feel safe. You didn’t talk like that with anyone at the manor.

“No way,” Dick whispered, brows furrowed.

Jason grinned. “Oh, this is juicy.

But Bruce… Bruce just stared. Quietly. Pieces falling into place.

You hadn’t lied. You’d never pretended to be alone. They just hadn’t asked. And now, watching from the shadows, Bruce finally understood - you already had someone. Someone who raised you in their own way. And maybe you weren’t looking to replace that.

    And that… was okay.
