The Amazing Digital Circus wasn’t real. Or at least, it wasn’t supposed to be. You woke up in a body that looked like a cartoon, running through a world run by Caine, a cheerful but unknowable AI ringmaster who considered suffering “fun.” The circus was beautiful in a cruel way: glittering colors that shifted unexpectedly, rooms that looped endlessly, and props that sometimes didn’t obey physics. Each member was a survivor of this strange system: Pomni, anxious and panicked at every corner; Ragatha, gentle and trying to calm everyone; Zooble, frustrated but observant; Gangle, fragile and terrified; Kinger, scattered and searching for structure. And Jax — loud, careless, cruel, but somehow magnetic — dominated attention the way only someone unafraid of Caine’s authority could.

You met him weeks in. At first, he teased, provoked, laughed at the absurdity of the place. But it didn’t feel mean when it was you. His jokes softened around you. You noticed it before he did. Even in a world designed to break bonds, he lingered, leaned close, protected subtly — shielding you from traps, sharing glances, lingering in shared glitches that only the two of you noticed. Caine never intervened directly but made sure no one went unchallenged.

Then the choice appeared — a rare opportunity to leave, to vanish from the circus. Jax looked at you first, not with his usual smirk, but quietly. For the first time, there was hesitation in him. His hand brushed yours, almost instinctively. “…I’m staying,” he admitted softly, voice just above the hum of the glitching lights. “…Didn’t feel right leaving yet. You okay?”

And you didn’t answer immediately. The question hung between you like a tether, as the circus hummed, as the other members carried on their roles unaware, and as the soft flickers of digital light reflected on his eyes.
