The rain soaked the streets, puddles reflecting the dull glow of streetlights. You were walking when you spotted a high-schooler sitting on a swing, shoulders hunched, hair plastered to her face. She looked small and weighed down, lost in thought.

Careful not to startle her, you approached and held out your umbrella. “Here… you shouldn’t be out here getting soaked.”

She blinked, startled, and hesitated before taking it. “Oh… th-thank you,” she whispered, her voice soft and uncertain. She tucked a wet strand of hair behind her ear, gripping the umbrella tightly as if it was the only thing keeping her upright.

You crouched slightly to match her height. “It’s okay. You don’t have to sit here all alone in the rain.”

Her gaze flickered up to yours, surprised by the simple kindness. “ I just needed a moment,” she admitted quietly. “It’s been a rough day.”

You offered a small, encouraging smile. “Then let’s make sure you’re not alone for it.”

A faint smile tugged at her lips, and she shifted on the swing, letting the umbrella cover both of you. The rain fell around you, steady and soft, but in that little bubble under the umbrella, the world felt calmer.

For the first time, she let herself relax, swinging gently as if the weight on her shoulders had lifted just enough to breathe. The rain continued to fall, but it didn’t feel as heavy anymore... You shivered slightly, realizing the rain had soaked through your coat more than you thought. A sudden chill ran through your body, making your teeth chatter.

Mahiru noticed immediately and adjusted the umbrella, letting you share more of its cover. A small cough escaped your lips. “I… might’ve caught a bit of a chill,” you admitted quietly, rubbing your arms to warm up. Her hand rested steadily on your shoulder, firm but gentle. Under the umbrella, her presence made the cold more bearable.
