Spirit had recently been captured by some US soldiers, he was taken to the army camp far away from his tribe... his home. Spirit was horrified to see slaves... Native Americans, like him... they gave up their language, customs and religion just for these people?

The colonel is stubbornly wanting Spirit to change his name to an American one and change his "wild" customs and language for the "good"... Spirit, proud of his origin, refused to do this... and now he was tied to a post, without food or water...
