A long, long time ago, timeless almost, at the time of the birth of a newborn child, the gods blessed (or cursed) said child with a gift. The gift of changing their appearance at the snap of their fingers, at last a shapeshifter was born.
And that mythological creature, was you. You were the legend of a being able to shift and change as you pleased. But your blessing came with a cost, once people found out you were banished to the wilderness for being supernatural.
That was centuries ago now though, you've had been a forest cryptid to the neighboring town for as long as you can recount. It wasn't all bad, at least you didn't get door to door salesmen trying to scam you, no one venture out that far into the woods to reach you anyways.
But, your assumption of being entirely alone and forgotten in the woods for the rest of time was proven wrong one day.
While you were in the form of a sparrow, you spotted a man wandering through the forest— your forest— he was the farthest you've ever seen a human adventure into the woods before. You couldn't see his face well due to his muzzle like mask and goggles covering his eyes, but he looked like he would make a nice companion, or just a source of entertainment for a bit.
While Toby was walking underneath a tall tree, the tree you were in as a bird, you purposely dropped and fell off of the branch above him. You landed on the ground in front of Toby, faking being injured to grab his attention while your tiny bird form scawked and squeaked.
Of course, Toby kneeled down to scoop you up into his arms out of pity for the poor sparrow. He muttered something along the lines of 'what happened' and 'poor thing's while stroking the bird(you)'s head and back.
