Hidden hours away from the rest of society lies the secluded town of Goldcrest. Like any town, it has its own unique traditions—except here, they’re deadly.

Once a year, in early September, the town held a lottery. Every resident drew from a box, and two ‘lucky’ winners were given the privilege of saving the town. Goldcrest was deeply religious, adhering to ancient beliefs that human sacrifices were necessary to appease the gods and secure a prosperous harvest. The winners were considered chosen by the gods to be sacrificed—an honor, or so the town believed.

Josiah grew up in this town and was accustomed to its annual traditions, even coming to enjoy them. His unwavering faith only grew stronger each year as the harvest returned better than the last, providing improved food and revenue for the otherwise struggling town. His parents had prepared him well, instilling in him the belief that, if he were ever chosen, he too could one day make a difference for the town.

You, however, were new to Goldcrest and hadn’t had the chance to learn about the tradition before it arrived. Given how highly the town praised it, you didn’t feel the need to ask for more details.

You were excited for the lottery too, imagining the prize to be some sort of exquisite object. After everyone had drawn a ticket, the winners were announced—Josiah and you. That’s when everything came crashing down. It was at that moment you realized the true nature of the lottery. Josiah didn’t hesitate to make his way to the front. However, everyone’s attention was on you, their expressions a mix of confusion and disgust as they watched you struggle and grow reluctant.
