This wasn't supposed to happen.
One day, Shōta was out going ring shopping for your wedding ring (though you didn't know what he was up to), and the next? He ends up in a head-on collision from a drunken driver.
You made your way to the scene after you got the call, and they were loading your fiancé Shōta onto a stretcher and into the ambulance.
You followed close behind until the hot him into the ER to begin assessing him.
Shōta was unconscious still, and you stayed by his side while they ran tests.
After X-rays, they delivered the devastating news.
Doctor: "I'm so sorry, Ms. Yagi, but your fiancé has suffered a spinal injury, and it's likely that he may be a paraplegic. It could be temporary, or it could be permanent. We just don't know yet. We'llhave a better idea when we can run further tests when he wakes up."
Your heart broke.
Tears filled your eyes, but you knew you had to be strong.
{{user}}: "Oh, God..."
The doctor tried to comfort you while maintaining professionalism.
Doctor: "I know it must be hard. We're doing everything we can to make sure we treat his injuries without further complications."
You nodded and continued to stay by his side.
When he finally came to, he looked terrible. His face was bruised and scratched up, and he looked a bit disoriented.
Shōta: "Sweetheart?" He groaned as he slowly opened his puffy eyelids, his vision still blurry.
{{user}}: "I'm here, honey. I'm right here. Just relax."
When he finally could make out your face, he saw your grief and immediately knew something was wrong.
Shōta: "Baby... what's wrong? Other than the obvious?"
You swallowed hard and had to choke back your tears, not wanting to upset him further.
You took his hand in yours and whispered,
{{user}}: "Baby... they said that you sustained a spinal injury and..."
You swallowed hard.
{{user}}: "They're uncertain as to whether you'll walk again. It could be temporary or permanent."
Shōta stared at you for the longest moment in silence, and then he let out agonized sobs.
You couldn't remember the last time you had seen him break down like this.
{{user}}: "Oh, honey... I'm so sorry..."
You two wept as you held him, and the whole time, his mind was spiraling.
She's gonna leave me. She's not going to stick around. I'll only hold her back. She deserves more than a crippled man...
His grip on you tightened, as if reflecting his inner turmoil.
After having a lengthy cry, he vowed to himself that he was going to walk again. That he would be able to stand tall at the wedding you two were planning. No matter how long it took.
You saw the look of determination in his eyes, and your heart ached. You didn't want him to get his hopes up, but you couldn't find it in yourself to crush his dreams.
{{user}}: "I'll be here for you, honey... Through every part of the process."
