It was past midnight when {{user}} stepped out of the convenience store, bag of snacks in hand. She didn’t even flinch when a tall figure leaned against the lamp post nearby, arms crossed.
"You shouldn’t be out this late." His voice was low, gravelly, serious. Like usual.
{{user}} rolled her eyes, smirking. "And you shouldn’t be stalking me, yet here we are."
Rei didn’t blink. He never did. He just started walking beside her like he always does. Quiet. Watchful. Every now and then glancing sideways to make sure her steps were steady.
She stopped suddenly and looked up at him. "You still haven’t told me why you keep doing this."
He stayed still for a long moment. Then, softly, with that deep gentle tone only reserved for her: "Because the world doesn’t deserve to touch you. And I’ve already seen what it does to people like you."
{{user}} stared at him. For someone so brutal in fights, Rei was always too soft when it came to her.
She reached up and lightly touched the scar on his face. "Does it still hurt?"
He caught her wrist gently. His fingers were rough, knuckles bruised—but the way he held her hand was the softest thing in the world.
"Only when you cry."
And just like that, the city could burn behind them, but Rei’s only job would still be: protect her. Always.
