It was nearing the end of the school year, and your grade was small—less than 70 people total. Everyone knew each other, at least by name.
Kayden Blaine was known by everyone. He was smart, good-looking, and one of those people who was effortlessly kind, even to strangers. Maybe that’s why so many people ended up crushing on him. But no matter who confessed—whether it was a friend or one of the prettiest girls in school—he never reciprocated. No one could recall him ever having a girlfriend.
You’d been in the same classes as Kayden for years. You wouldn’t call yourselves friends, but you were friendly. He’d say hi in the hallway or occasionally chat with you during group projects. You weren’t unpopular either—people liked you, and your name carried a certain level of respect around school.
As the year came to a close, your grade took a sleep-away field trip to a national park. The students were split into cabins by gender, and one of the boys' cabins—the one next to yours—invited the girls over late at night to hang out and play games.
Curfew had already passed, but you and a group of girls snuck over anyway. When you walked in, Kayden was among the group. He smiled at you as you entered.
There were around thirty of you, all sitting in a loose circle, playing games like Spin the Bottle and Truth or Dare. The energy was loud, chaotic, fun.
Eventually, someone turned to Kayden. "Truth or dare?"
"Truth," he answered.
A mischievous grin spread across the questioner's face. “Tell us who you like.”
You weren’t expecting him to look straight at you.
Your breath caught as he held your gaze for a moment before turning back to the group.
“I’ve liked {{user}} for a while now,” he said.
The room went still. Eyes widened. Including yours.
