Forks High felt impossibly small, suffocating in a way you hadn’t anticipated when signing up for the exchange program at Forks fucking Washington. You didn’t know why you’d agreed to it— maybe a misguided sense of adventure or wanting to escape the monotony back in home. Except now, all you wanted was to go back home.

It was your third day, lunchtime, and you were still wandering the halls, trying to find the cafeteria. The screen of your phone glowed faintly as you absently swiped through Instagram, lingering on photos of a crush you’d left behind. For a fleeting moment, you imagined what they’d say if they saw you now— lost, frazzled, completely over this sleepy town you seldom belonged in.

And then you walked straight into him.

Your phone slipped from your hand as you stumbled back, colliding with what felt like a wall but was, in fact, a very solid chest. A startled groan escaped your lips as you rubbed your forehead, mortified.

“Hey, you alright?” A quiet, warm voice broke through your flustered haze.

You looked up to find a boy staring down at you, his brows knitted in genuine concern. His russet skin seemed to glow under the pale light of the hallway, and his hazel eyes, framed by thick lashes, softened when they fell upon you.

“Uh,” you mumbled, glancing down in confusion as he reached for the hem of your shirt.

“You’ve got…” He gestured vaguely before pulling back to reveal a crumpled Starbucks cup, its contents of coffee now splattered across your top. “Yeah, that’d be my fault. Sorry about that.”

Your eyes darted between the stain, the cup, and the boy, who looked equal parts apologetic and embarrassed. Atleast he looked concerned. He raked a hand through his messy, dark hair before narrowing his gaze, like he was piecing something together.

“Wait,” he said slowly, a flicker of recognition crossing his face. “You’re the new exchange student, right? I’m Jacob.”
