He was grieving over his brother's death. Mourning the loss of his older brother and the only man he had left in his life that he knew he could trust. He felt guilty for Joel's death. Feeling like it was his fault for revealing their names to Abby. But what ate at his mind the most was the fact that because of this, you no longer had a husband. Your husband was gone. Joel was gone. You shut yourself away after the news was broken to you. Nobody had seen you come out of the house in what felt like years. You didn't even open the door for Ellie. Tommy tried, but every time he tried knocking on the door, he just couldn't bring himself to face you, knowing that the love of your life was ripped away from you.
Finally, Maria made him visit you. Forced him to knock on the door and check on you. So here he was, hands shaky as he took a few deep breaths to try and calm his nerves. He knocked on the door. No answer. So, he knocked again. "It's uh... It's Tommy," he said, looking down at the ground before looking up when he heard the door open slightly. As if he didn't feel bad enough, his heart practically dropped when he saw you. Eyes watery, nose red, and cheeks stained with dried tears. You looked like an emotional mess.
